Mill Reef Stakes Betting Odds

The Mill Reef Stakes will feature a maximum of ten horses and it’s a Group 2 encounter that will take some winning. Into The Sky runs for Jim Boyle and caught the eye when obliging with a victory last time out. However, there are horses who have more experience under their belt and that includes Wise Approach who has collected two victories thus far.

Charlie Appleby saddles a horse who might end up going off favourite, although the same applies to Rock On Thunder who has consecutive runner-up spots after winning earlier in the campaign. Words Of Truth has also racked up straight wins and he’s another Charlie Appleby-trained charge who is among the quartet of horses at a short price.

Into The Sky produced an eye-catching performance at Newbury on a debut which was a huge surprise to everyone concerned. Sent off as the 80/1 rank outsider, the horse was able to oblige in a field of thirteen runners to land victory in a maiden stakes race over six and a half furlongs. It was an emphatic margin by seven and a half lengths, boding well for this encounter.

However, that race isn’t a lot to feed from. Perhaps Wise Approach is a more solid proposition. Charlie Appleby saddles a two-year-old who was third at Deauville last month. That came after a Newbury victory where the charge was sent off as the 11/10 favourite and was able to win by four lengths overall.

Previously to this, the same horse was able to finish second in the Norfolk Stakes which was a Group 2 encounter at Royal Ascot. It was a strong showing to finish narrowly behind favourite Charles Darwin, with the runner having previously fared well at York. However, Rock On Thunder has now racked up consecutive runner-up performances.

Kevin Ryan saddles a horse who was last seen chasing home Lifeplan at York on 22 August in the Gimcrack Stakes. It’s a serious piece of form considering this is a Group 2 race and it came after a second placed finish at Newbury Racecourse. That was in the Irish Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury on 18 July and it could be worth considering this runner.

The Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes takes place over six furlongs, with Ides Of March having won back-to-back races and the two-year-old sets the standard for this race. All four of his outings have come at the Curragh, with a victory coming at the end of August when fending off six other runners after previously beating a field of eighteen.

Cool Hoof Luke has also won twice this season, with Andrew Balding’s two-year-old having last been seen winning at York and that came after finishing third out of seven runners at Goodwood. The victory came in the Gimcrack Stakes and there’s likely to be money for a horse who should travel well at Newbury.

Powerful Glory was able to record a victory on his debut and the two-year-old could perform well for trainer Richard Fahey. He returns to the track a month after winning at Pontefract, with this victory coming by five and a half lengths. However, Shadow Of Light has more experience and two wins under his belt.

The two-year-old finished second to Cool Hoof Luke after claiming wins at Yarmouth and Newmarket. The latest of these successes was in a Novice Stakes where the 8/11 favourite was able to score by six furlongs. Symbol Of Strength has been able to win twice also and we’re expecting an open battle over six furlongs.

Elite Status has been running in esteemed company recently and that explains why the two-year-old only finished seven out of nine runners last time out. In the Sumbe Prix Morny at Deauville, the horse was unable to compete favourably against runners such as Vandeek and Ramatuelle, although there was previously a victory at the French track.

That came in the Prix de Cabourg, with Clifford Lee able to steer the charge to a victory over six furlongs on soft ground, with this being the horse’s third win of the season. There was also third place in the Norfolk Stakes at the Royal Ascot meeting, with the season starting with victories at Doncaster and Sandown.

Lake Forest comes into this race off the back of a win at York where the William Haggas-trained runner was able to oblige in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with the 16/1 shot claiming the spoils in the Group 2 encounter. This saw the horse bounce back after flopping as the 1/3 favourite in a Novice Stakes at Newmarket.

Eben Shaddad was able to score in a Novice Stakes race over six furlongs at Newmarket and has to be respected on that form, although the horse is more lightly raced. Mister Sketch runs for trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, with the horse running well at odds of 18/1 at Newbury to finish second before triumphing at Salisbury.

Aidan O’Brien is one of the most decorated trainers in the history of Flat horse racing, although there are still certain races which have eluded the Irishman and that includes the Mill Reef Stakes.

This is a Group 2 encounter for two-year-olds and the latest renewal takes place on Saturday 21 September, with O’Brien hoping that a horse from his stable can show enough quality over six furlongs on what is likely to be firm ground.

Considering this race is for two-year-olds, there’s a certain amount of unpredictability that you don’t get with more established horses, although Monarch of Egypt is likely to be among the favourites if he lines up for the race.

We’ve seen this horse make three outings during the current Flat season, with Ryan Moore on board each time and it all started with a victory at Naas before two second-placed finishes at The Curragh in June and August.

On each occasion, Monarch of Egypt was beaten by American raider Siskin, although the latter will be nowhere to be seen at Newbury and perhaps this will give the former the chance to shine.

Harpocrates is another interesting runner for O’Brien who has been determined to get lots of racing into this particular two-year-old, although there has only been one win to show from his seven outings to date.

At the beginning of August, the horse scored a victory at Naas although the rest of the season has largely seen a series of near-misses and it’s likely that Ryan Moore will choose Monarch Of Egypt instead.

Arizona is the other O’Brien horse likely to line up and it should be noted that the two-year-old already has a glittering Group 2 success under his belt after winning the Coventry Stakes.

Moore rode the horse to victory as the 15/8 favourite on that occasion, with the horse having more recently had an engagement in Deauville, with the charge finishing a credible fourth in the Darley Prix Morny - Finale des Darley Series.

However, O’Brien might have to wait another year for a victory in the Mill Reef Stakes, with Mums Tipple likely to go off favourite and the Richard Hannon-trained charge has done little wrong in both outings this season.

There was a victory in a Maiden Stakes at Ascot in July before a step up in class saw the horse claim another win, this time in a Yearling Stakes at York, with the charge now bidding for a hat-trick of victories.

That win at the Knavesmire was seriously impressive, with Mums Tipple routing the field and Hannon admits that the horse has a number of different routes open to him.

Hannon said: "He's in all those nice races, the Middle Park, Champagne and in the Doncaster sales race, but he won't be going for that. He will probably go for the Middle Park or Mill Reef, but I'm not sure yet.

"He has taken everything fine. I've never seen a two-year-old win like that. He won the race coming out of the gate. He is a good horse. He needed the Ascot race, but that put him right for the other day."

He added: "He doesn't do a lot at home, but a lot of good horses are like that. "Paco Boy was like that, whereas with Canford Cliffs, whoever was riding him looked like they were on a jet ski.

"Mums Tipple is more like Paco Boy, but then he comes to the races and does something like he did the other day. He won that race with a 5lb penalty by 11 lengths - I haven't seen any horse win like that for a long time, let alone one of ours.

"The owners are really sweet and you do get a lot of job satisfaction when you see people like that enjoying their day."
