Hamish is the oldest horse in the Stand Cup Stakes, with the nine-year-old looking like the one to beat at Chester Racecourse. It was an impressive showing from the William Haggas-trained charge where the horse was able to score at Goodwood in early August. The even money favourite for the Tapster Stakes was able to score by a slender margin.

This came after an excellent effort in a listed race over one mile and four furlongs. The 10/11 favourite was able to score over five lengths, with the previous display coming at Longchamp in the Prix du Conseil de Paris. It was a fine showing on heavy ground and we think that Hamish is a worthy favourite to land a victory.

Military Academy is a younger adversary who was seventh last time out in a competitive encounter at Goodwood. The horse was found wanting in the Group One Goodwood Cup Stakes, with that coming after running in close behind Hamish at the same course. The last victory came on the all-weather at Kempton in November.

Sir Dinadan has failed to land a victory this term but the Ralph Beckett-trained runner performed well in the Irish Derby when finishing fifth. The horse was sent off at 40/1 before outrunning his odds. However, the charge was found wanting at Goodwood at the end of July when struggling to make an impression in the Gordon Stakes.

2024 Stand Cup Stakes Tips

The Virgin Bet Stand Cup Stakes takes place on 14 September, with up to fifteen runners competing over one mile, four and a half furlongs at Chester Racecourse. Ambiente Friendly has been in the winners’ enclosure this season and the three-year-old could go off as favourite, with James Fanshawe training a horse that has plenty of ability.

The latest effort was a slightly disappointing tenth in the Juddmonte International Stakes, with this coming after a solid effort at the Curragh where the 6/4 chance finished third in the Irish Derby. This came after finishing second in the Epsom Derby, with a previous success being recorded in the Derby Trial at Lingfield.

La Yakel was successful on his latest outing, with William Haggas saddling a runner who was able to score as a five-year-old when winning a race at Hamilton. It was a two and a half length success over one mile and four furlongs on heavy ground, with Aimeric having also run impressively this term and has to be one for the shortlist.

Al Qareem has the opportunity to win his first race of the season after six efforts coming close this term, with Karl Burke seeing his horse finish second at Newbury when running home behind Al Aasy in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes. There was previously a fifth-placed finish out of six horses in the Goodwood Cup Stakes.
