There’s an intriguing contest over two miles, three and a half furlongs on Saturday. The runners and riders battle it out in the Ladbrokes Ascot Hurdle, with this Grade 2 encounter featuring Wodhooh and Potters Charm. The former runs for Gordon Elliott and can certainly be more progressive than the others as a five-year-old.

However, the latter has solid credentials and will be aiming to bounce back for the Twiston-Davies’. The six-year-old was a faller last time out but has previously ran well. Altobelli notched a couple of decent successes in the previous campaign, with Kateira claiming the spoils on a seasonal debut and Dan Skelton is in excellent form.

Wodhooh looks like a star of the future based on efforts so far. The horse was second at Aintree in the Aintree Hurdle in early April, finishing behind Lossiemouth in that Grade One encounter over two miles and four furlongs. That came after a success at the Cheltenham Festival in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.

That was a success by over four lengths, with that coming after the mare was able to oblige in the Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in December, with Potters Charm potentially being the fly in the ointment. The six-year-old was able to score in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle back in November 2024 before following this up with a success in the Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree.

Altobelli was a solid performer last season when achieving a consecutive double at Ascot. In January, there was a win in the Holloway’s Handicap Hurdle and that came before a success in the Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle. More recently, the runner struggled to make an impression on an outing in the Ivy Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree.

Kateira will represent the in-form Skelton stable and the eight-year-old boasts solid credentials coming into this race. There was a victory of sorts at Wetherby recently over two miles when seeing off Golden Ace, with that coming after a second-placed finish at Doncaster back in January. That was in a long-distance mares’ race.

2024 Ascot Hurdle Tips

Golden Ace was able to land a victory on a consecutive basis last season, with the horse having racked up four straight victories last term. Jeremy Scott trains a runner who was last seen winning at Cheltenham in April, with the odds-on favourite landing a huge victory after previously scoring at the Cheltenham Festival.

That latter triumph came in the Ryanair Mares’ Novices Hurdle, with the 10/1 shot obliging over two miles and one furlong, with the horse in receipt of the mares’ allowance when it comes to this race. However, Blueking D’oroux is a five-year-old who could certainly be in the shake-up and we’re intrigued to see how this runner performs.

The five-year-old was last seen running well when finishing fourth out of eight runners in a Grade 2 Hurdle at Sandown Park at the end of April, with the 16/1 shot finishing less than ten lengths behind favourite Impaire Et Passe. The horse landed a notable victory when succeeding in the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle at Ascot and a repeat could be on the cards.

Thunder Rock can’t be discounted from proceedings, with the eight-year-old having been pulled up when running against Gerri Colombe at Aintree, with the horse struggling to handle the pace on that occasion. There was previously a win in the bet365 Premier Chase when the 9/4 favourite was able to triumph by seven lengths.
