Home By The Lee unseated his rider in the Stayers’ Hurdle although he had previously secured two wins and could be a good each-way prospect. Punters might be somewhat wary when it comes to backing Teahupoo in the Liverpool Hurdle. After all, the eight-year-old was all the rage as the 7/4 favourite in the Stayers’ Hurdle on Day Three of the Cheltenham Festival, although the horse was found wanting. In the end, Bob Olinger got the better of the market leader to win.

Previously to this, there was a solid enough showing in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle when finishing roughly four lengths behind Lossiemouth, with the horse having won at Punchestown last May. In terms of finding a runner to beat the favourite, Home By The Lee might be able to bounce back from unseating his rider at Cheltenham.

There was a festive success at Leopardstown last time out when beating Bob Olinger by six lengths, with this form now looking good considering the latter ran so well in the Stayers’ Hurdle. Strong Leader can’t be easily discounted and the eight-year-old was able to run a solid enough race at Cheltenham in January.

Let’s not forget that the horse won the Liverpool Hurdle a year ago, with this being a success by over four lengths. There was also a triumph at Newbury after that although that was followed by a disappointing showing at Ascot at the end of December. Perhaps wind surgery could be beneficial to the horse and he has the course and distance.

2024 Liverpool Hurdle Tips

Irish Point was able to perform really well in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and the big question is now whether the horse will be entered in the Aintree Hurdle or Liverpool Hurdle at the Grand National meeting. There could be a temptation to go for the latter option and see if the runner can stay over a longer distance.

Finishing a close second to State Man last month was a solid achievement, with the horse having previously run well over three miles to claim a Christmas win at Leopardstown. An eleven length triumph over Asterion Forlonge suggests that the horse could be suited to this longer distance, although it will be interesting to see which runner goes off as favourite.

Flooring Porter and Teahupoo battled it out in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last month, with the latter claiming a success by nearly four lengths in the end. The Gordon Elliott-trained runner was able to oblige as the 5/4 favourite when winning over three miles, although the odds suggest a closer encounter this time.

Teahupoo is a seven-year-old with bags of talent and is perhaps the value bet in the race. Previously to landing a success at Cheltenham, there was a win at Fairyhouse in early December and there could be some merit in backing the runner for another success. Home By The Lee and Crambo are the others for the shortlist.

Marie’s Rock was disappointing when finishing well down the order of the mares’ race on Day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival, although perhaps the horse was running in the wrong race. She might find a distance over three miles more to her liking, with the horse having previously won the Relkeel Hurdle at Prestbury Park at odds of 11/2.

However, Teahupoo is possibly the horse to side with and there was lots to like about a narrow third placed in the Stayers’ Hurdle, with the six-year-old having been somewhat unfortunate not to beat eventual winner Sire Du Berlais considering the controversial start of that particular race.

Dashel Drasher was sent off at 40/1 in that race before landing a runner-up spot and there could be more to come from Jeremy Scott’s charge and might have won without making a mistake five hurdles out. The ten-year-old might benefit from the flatter Aintree track and there could be lots of other interesting contenders.

Champ might be set for a final hurrah in this Liverpool Hurdle race and the JP McManus-owned runner was able to win the Coral Long Distance Hurdle on 25 November 2022, with the eleven-year-old having enjoyed a decorated career which saw the horse finish third in the Liverpool Hurdle last year behind none other than Sire Du Berlais.
