Booster Bob has been racking up the Newbury wins and the first of these came in March. On soft ground over two miles and four furlongs, the horse produced a smart effort to land the spoils when narrowly beating Vincenzo. The runner was sent off at 16/1 and came before a late November triumph where the charge enjoyed a four-length success over a longer distance.

Vincenzo has run consistently well for Sam Thomas over the past couple of years. In mid-January, the eight-year-old was able to score at Ascot as the 6/4 favourite. This was over two miles and five furlongs, with the horse previously landing runner-up spots on two consecutive occasions at Cheltenham. Indeed, the horse hasn't been out of the first two in the previous five races.

Madara returned to the track after a long absence when pitching up at Wetherby over the festive period. The horse probably needed the run when finishing fifth out of six runners, with Dan Skelton's charge having previous run well on a number of occasions. There was a second-placed effort at Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase in December 2024.

Glengouly was pulled up at Cheltenham on New Year's Day, although perhaps that was a blip. After all, the horse was previously successful when scoring at Prestbury Park in December, with the runner getting the job done at a massive 33/1. In a handicap chase, there was plenty to like after a solid showing over two miles at the same track.

Vincenzo has achieved consecutive runner-up spots this season and perhaps the horse can go one better on 1 January. Sam Thomas' eight-year-old is a quality performer who landed a second-placed finish at Cheltenham in the middle of November. This was followed up by another strong effort at the same track and has to be considered to hit the frame again.

Booster Bob also has similar qualities, with Olly Murphy training an eight-year-old who has won consecutive races at Newbury. The horse beat Vincenzo in early March before a fine performance at the same track more recently. The runner scored over two miles, six and a half furlongs when obliging by four and a half lengths.

Hoe Joly Smoke lines up for trainer Dan Skelton and will be bidding to make it fourth time lucky this season. There have been some strong efforts and many of them have recently come at Cheltenham. He was third out of eighteen at the end of October before another third-placed finish in November although only midfield last time out.

Skelton has another charge in the form of Madara who has had a long lay-off and might return in great form. In the previous campaign, there was a mid-December 2024 runner-up spot at Cheltenham and it's clear that the horse has solid credentials. There might be a concern over whether the runner might need this is a first outing.

Gemirande has recorded back-to-back successes and the nine-year-old could represent a good each-way bet when it comes to this New Year’s Day encounter at Cheltenham Racecourse. Venetia Williams saddles a runner who was successful at Prestbury Park in mid-December when winning the December Gold Cup.

There was previously a success at Ascot over two miles and five furlongs, with this being a seven and a half length triumph, although this is a competitive encounter and Springwell Bay has been registering some decent finishes this term. The eight-year-old has ran twice already at Cheltenham this term after a previous success at Chepstow.

Colonel Harry began the latest campaign with a runner-up spot in a Carlisle encounter featuring four runners, while the most recent outing saw the horse finish way off the pace at Newbury. Jamie Snowden also has Ga Law and the best effort this season was finishing second in the Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase.

Lisnamult Lad has decent each-way claims based on his efforts so far, with the eight-year-old having fallen at Navan in the middle of November. However, there was plenty to like about a victory at Cheltenham when obliging as a 20/1 shot when triumphing in a big field in October. This is our idea of the best bet in the race.
