1965 Chase Betting Odds
The Ladbrokes 1965 Chase is always a thrilling encounter, with Ascot Racecourse hosting this late November encounter. Il Est Francais runs for Tom George and could be the one to beat, with the horse back at the track for a seasonal bow. Pic D’orhy has run more recently and Paul Nicholls will have high hopes of a bold run over two miles and five furlongs.
Jango Baie runs for Nicky Henderson and there were some notable runs last term, with Gidleigh Park having also run well last season. The seven-year-old is trained by Harry Fry, with The Jukebox Man bidding for a third consecutive win. Henry de Bromhead saddles Heart Wood who could end up being a decent each-way contender.

The Ladbrokes 1965 Chase is the third race on Saturday’s Ascot card, with lots of lively contenders battling it out over two miles and five furlongs. Il Est Francais was third in a hurdle encounter at Compiegne last time out, with that coming after an April win at Lyon Parilly. There was a sixth-placed finish in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Perhaps Pic D’orhy is a better alternative at a bigger price. Paul Nicholls saw his charge finish second at Wetherby at the beginning of November, with that effort coming in the bet365 Charlie Hall Chase. That was a bold effort over three miles on good ground, with that coming after the horse was pulled up at Sandown although there was a victory at Ascot in February.
That was in the Betfair Ascot Chase where the runner was able to land a ten-length success against favourite Corbetts Cross. The horse also won this renewal last year when triumphing at odds-on, although Jango Baie is another intriguing contender. Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old was a solid performer at Aintree at the beginning of April.
In the Manifesto Novices’ Chase, the 6/4 favourite narrowly missed out in a Grade One encounter, with Impaire Et Passe and Gidleigh Park finishing ahead of the horse. The latter will line up here and looks a good each-way contender at the prices. Harry Fry’s horse was able to score at Windsor back in January in a small field.

Pic D'Orhy is going to be difficult to beat when it comes to the 1965 Chase, with the nine-year-old having achieved a great deal during his career so far. The horse is trained by Paul Nicholls, with the money coming for a runner who has had wind surgery since being pulled up at Aintree. Previously to that, there was an outstanding performance at Ascot.
In the Betfair Ascot Chase, there was a five and a half length success over L’Homme Presse and there was a further four length margin of victory against Ahoy Senor. There was also a strong run when finishing second in the Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton and the horse finished less than two lengths behind Banbridge.
Dashel Drasher is an experienced campaigner and Jeremy Scott trains a runner who can definitely make an impact. He is carrying six pounds less than the favourite, with the horse last seen running at Aintree. On that occasion, he was seventh out of ten runners, with that effort coming in the Liverpool Hurdle.
Le Patron is interesting in the sense that there was a double success at Sandown twelve months ago, with the horse then struggling to make an impact at the same track in early February. The runner found life way too tough in the Turners Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham although has the potential to return to form in this encounter.

Shishkin is a popular horse who was able to claim a victory in the Betfair Ascot Chase last season when triumphing by sixteen lengths over Pic D’Orhy. The Nicky Henderson-trained runner then finished second to Envoi Allen in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival before winning the Aintree Bowl Chase in Liverpool last April.
This is a horse that has enjoyed plenty of success throughout his glittering career, with the horse having demonstrated his class at Ascot last time out. Perhaps Pic D’Orhy will make it a closer run race this time around, with Paul Nicholls saddling a horse who was able to win the Marsh Chase at Aintree when obliging by four lengths.
Some will point to the fact that the second favourite is likely to find more improvement being a year younger, with Dashel Drasher running for trainer Jeremy Scott and the horse has had the benefit of having a recent outing. The horse is also carrying six pounds less than the front two in the betting market and that could be a big benefit.
Minella Drama and Thunder Rock could also perform well at bigger odds and might be open to each-way selection, with the former having finished second out of eleven horses at Aintree Racecourse when participating in the Old Roan Limited Handicap Chase. He was seven lengths behind Pic d’Orhy back in April but could be capable of bridging the gap here.
Paul Nicholls is no stranger to having chasing superstars in his stable, having previously saddled the likes of Kauto Star and Denman.
However, it’s been a while since the former champion trainer had a horse with the calibre of Cyrname, with the charge having scored at Ascot in January and February last season.
The seven-year-old claimed victory in the bet365 Chase over two miles and five furlongs before another win at the same course when triumphing in the Betfair Ascot Chase. The latter was a Grade 1 encounter and brings him right into the reckoning for a showdown with Altior this season.
Nicholls currently has his horse tiled towards the Christy 1965 Chase at Ascot in November, with the trainer typically bullish about his chances, even though Altior has a tremendous unbeaten record which spans over several seasons.
Nicholls told Sky Sports Racing: "One has got form over two (miles) in Altior and this horse has form over two-five. It will be some clash if they meet at Ascot. He (Cyrname) doesn't have to run from the front, but it suits him doing that. Kempton can be a front-runners track if you jump and gallop and he is slightly better right-handed.
"He is a high-class horse who will hopefully keep going forward, (but) he has got to get three miles yet. It's a bit like Altior - it's great being able to gallop and get two-mile-five and he (Cyrname) suggested at Ascot he will get three, but until they actually do it you don't know for sure.”
Racing fans will hope this is the start of a fantastic new rivalry, with the horses both likely to be entered in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. Altior is currently trading at odds of 3/1 to win the encounter, although there’s still the question mark over whether the horse will be able to get a three-mile trip.
According to the latest odds, it would appear that Altior is an unlikely Gold Cup contender at the Cheltenham Festival unless he really proved himself over a longer distance in the meantime, with trainer Nicky Henderson eager to push the horse’s limits this time around.
Writing in his blog for Unibet, the Seven Barrows trainer said: "I'd like to make it clear that nothing is set in stone as to what he is going to do. After a brief chat with Patricia Pugh (owner, on Sunday) we will all sit down again in the very near future and make a decision as to which route we take.
"It was the same a few years ago when we had to decide whether to stay hurdling and aim for the Unibet Champion Hurdle or go novice chasing, but I think it's fair to say we made the right decision on that front!
"We all know how good Altior is at two miles and I suppose you could say if we are the best at one thing, why change it? But I personally think he's looking for another half a mile in which case we have to start thinking about is the King George where we want to go?
"I have a huge amount of respect for Cyrname and I'm not afraid to take him on with Altior, but it is by no means certain that they will meet in the Ascot Chase as many have suggested and there's no doubt we'll do what's right for the horse.
"Altior is back at Seven Barrows and cantering away nicely so everything is going well and as soon as we have made a decision about where he'll start his season, I'll let you know!"
