The Kingston Town Classic is among the leading horse races in Western Australia and it’s essentially the headline act when it comes to the Perth Summer Carnival, with the 2020 renewal scheduled for 5 December 2020 and we’re excited to see the leading protagonists competing over a distance of 1,800 metres.

This is a fairly long distance race compared to other Australian encounters and it’s over a distance of one mile which means that stamina comes into play, with the race having been in place since 1976 and the race is named after Kingston Town who won this race in 1982 and entered the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.

Can Kay Cee Become Back to Back Champion?

Kay Cee was the winner of the Kingston Town Classic in 2019 and the horse is now bidding to become the first consecutive winner of the race since Playing God triumphed in 2010 and 2011, with the horse currently trading at 4/1 to win this 2020 renewal and we have to consider this in any conversation.

The Neville Parnham-trained charge was the 10/1 winner of the race twelve months ago when claiming a narrow victory over rank outsider Gailo Chop, with the horse recently returning to the Ascot track and claiming the spoils in the Waroa - Lee Steere Stakes after a previously underwhelming performance in the previous race.

However, there are a bunch of horses trading at around the 12/1 mark, including Snickerdoodledandy, Magical Dream and Best Of Days. Inspirational Girl and Cascadian are also among the horses that could line up here for the big money race.

The History of the Kingston Town Classic

The race originally started out as the Marlboro 50,000 between 1976-1979, with this race then being replaced by the Western Mail Classic and it stayed this way until 1983. Then came the Rothwell’s Stakes between 1984-1987 before another three-year sponsorship deal saw the race become the Winfield Stakes, with Kingston Town Classic becoming the name in 2007.

In 1979, the race achieved Group 1 status and is for many the highlight of the Summer Racing Carnival in Perth, with Kay Cee now bidding to enjoy that 2020 glory.
