Lowry’s Bar was also in the winners’ enclosure a couple of times last season and should be considered for a victory, with Hang In There an old-time operator who could still perform to a high level for Emma Lavelle. Largy Poet was second last time out and the Paul Nicholls-trained runner is capable of improving on that appearance.

The Doyen Chief is set to make a seasonal bow this weekend and the horse is among the favourites to win the Badger Beers Handicap Chase. There were two victories at the back end of the previous campaign, with Alan King saddling a runner who was last seen triumphing at Warwick. That came after a success at Kempton Park.

Cobra Queen has been in the winners’ enclosure on two occasions. Henry de Bromhead saddles a horse who was last seen prospering at Roscommon last time out. That was over two miles, five and a half furlongs. It came after a Tramore success and the Irish raider has proven time and again to have the stamina for a long-distance affair.

Lowry’s Bar returns to the track for a first time this season and the seven-year-old performed well in the previous campaign. There were victories at Exeter and Chepstow last December, although the horse was pulled up at Kempton Park in February and perhaps Hang In There is an experienced campaigner who is a decent alternative.

Emma Lavelle trains a runner who was successful at Chepstow in a previous showing. That was a five and a half length victory in October, with that coming after a couple of midfield finishes at Market Rasen and Uttoxeter. Largy Poet was second in a seasonal debut, with Paul Nicholls training a horse who might come on for that effort at Fontwell.

2023 Badger Beer Handicap Chase Tips

Frodon has been a stellar performer for Paul Nicholls over the years and much depends on whether the horse has anything left in the tank. At the age of eleven, it will be interesting to see how he performs and the last showing was a ninth-placed finish in the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Sandown Park over three miles, four and a half furlongs.

The Big Breakaway could be suited by the trip and the ground, with the eight-year-old last seen appearing in the Grand National back in April where the charge fell. It was also pulled up in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, although there had previously been smart performances at Haydock and Chepstow.

Dusart is an eight-year-old with strong credentials and was last seen running in the Scottish Grand National when he was travelling well before being brought down. There wasn’t too much fluent jumping on show when the Nicky Henderson-trained runner was pulled up in the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham, with Complete Unknown possibly better value.

The latter was able to win a three-runner race at Newton Abbot over two miles and five furlongs on heavy ground. This came after wind surgery although the horse had previously performed well when finishing second to Gerri Colombe in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase. The horse claimed a victory in a handicap chase at Kempton Park.
