We’ve got a huge field lining up for the Betfred Portland, with this being a five and a half furlong dash at Doncaster Racecourse. Elmonjed has landed back to back victories and comes into this race as slight favourite, with Shagraan having secured two wins from three outings and the three-year-old looks to have solid credentials.

American Affair has been racking up some strong performances this term and Jim Goldie will have high hopes for his four-year-old, with Holkham Bay having also secured two wins from the past three races. Pocklington has been out of form recently and Woodhay Wonder has been performing at a decent level and could be a good each-way price.

2024 Betfred Portland Tips

There are any number of horses who can land a victory in the Betfred Portland, with Elmonjed potentially going off as favourite. The three-year-old has recorded consecutive victories, with the William Haggas-trained runner having landed a win in a competitive race at York after claiming the spoils against a similar size field at Windsor.

Shagraan was triumphant at Haydock in early September, with the runner having secured a half-length victory over five furlongs at Haydock. This came after finishing fifth out of twenty-two runners at York, with the horse having previously secured the spoils at the beginning of August at Goodwood Racecourse.

American Affair was third to Shagraan at Haydock, with the horse previously finishing second at Pontefract and there was a runner-up performance at Haydock in the preceding race. There was a victory at Thirsk against fifteen other runners and the horse has performed solidly enough to suggest an each-way wager could pay out.

Holkham Bay has landed two victories from his past three outings, with the William Knight-trained runner having secured a win at York in the middle of June before securing a victory at Ascot in August. Sent off as the 4/1 favourite, Kylian was beaten by nearly three lengths and he can be forgiven for a below-par performance last time out.

2023 Portland Tips

Call Me Ginger is a talented seven-year-old and the horse has secured consecutive wins thus far. Jim Goldie will saddle a runner who looks to be a backable each-way price and the bookmakers might create extra places for this tussle. The horse might not have the highest rating although the runner has been afforded a favourable weight.

There have been recent wins at Chester and Ascot, with the former coming at the Roodee over five and a half furlongs on good to soft ground. There was then a second success under jockey Arnie Waugh where there was a half length victory in the National Racehorse Handicap at Ascot although the racing odds imply that the horse is an unlikely winner.

Chipstead has put up a couple of decent performances, with the five-year-old finishing fourth in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash, with the horse performing well over five furlongs on good ground. This came after another solid run in the John Smith’s City Wall Stakes at York and there is plenty to recommend this runner.

Get It was successful on the all-weather at Wolverhampton last time out and runs for trainer George Baker, while Richard Hannon looks likely to have at least one winner on St Leger Day and perhaps there will be multiple. Happy Romance was outclassed in the King’s Stand Stakes but could find things more to his liking here.
