Day One

The Coral Gold Cup Meeting starts on Friday 28 November, with seven races taking place and there are some quality heats taking place. The action gets under way at 12.15pm with the Coral Get Closer To The Action 'National Hunt' race and there are then a series of high-profile encounters at Newbury Racecourse. There’s a Limited Handicap Chase and then a Fillies Juvenile Race. These are followed by the John Francome Novices’ Chase and another handicap race. There is then the Long Distance Hurdle which is the showpiece event on Day One, with some quality long-distance horses lining up for a chance to secure the spoils.

Big Buck’s made history by landing four consecutive wins between 2009 and 2012. Other notable wins include Thistlecrack and Paisley Park, with more recent winners featuring Champ, Dashel Drasher and Strong Leader. This is a three-mile heat where the runners and riders battle it out over twelve obstacles and much depends on the going.

Day Two

We’ve got another seven races that comprise Coral Gold Cup Day. The action starts at 11.55am with a mares’ novice hurdle, with a handicap chase and two handicap hurdles then sandwiching a novices’ hurdle. However, the jewel in the crown is at 2.55pm when the Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase takes place.

This race is run over three miles and one furlong, with Le Milos, Cloudy Glen and Kandoo Kid among the recent winners. It’s a race where a maximum of twenty-four runners line up and the betting market is generally wide open. That’s certainly the case for the 2025 renewal where every horse is currently trading at odds of 8/1 or bigger.

Myretown returns to the track after enjoying a spate of wins last term, with Lucinda Russell saddling an eight-year-old who was able to score at the Cheltenham Festival last March. That amazing effort came in the Ultima Handicap Chase when the horse was able to score by a considerable eleven lengths.

Anything resembling that performance would potentially lead to victory, although Resplendent Grey is another horse with excellent form and that includes a recent win. The seven-year-old was last seen triumphing at Carlisle in early November, with that coming after a roaring success at Sandown Park when winning the bet365 Gold Cup.

That victory came over the big distance of three miles, four and a half furlongs. The horse is a quality jumper and that was in evidence when running well at the latest Cheltenham Festival. The National Hunt Challenge Cup Novices' Handicap Chase was over three miles, six furlongs, with the horse staying on well and securing fourth place.

Blizzard Of Oz is another one for the shortlist, with the horse trained by Willie Mullins. The seven-year-old has already had a couple of outings this term. There was a victory at Wexford at the end of October and that came after a second-placed effort at Punchestown in early May. That was in a long-distance handicap race.
